Shiprocket freight charges: how to find weight and RTO overcharges

By the Veritally team · Updated · 5 min read

Quick answer

Download Shiprocket's shipping charges and weight discrepancy reports, then check four things per AWB: was the charged weight slab higher than the applied weight, was forward freight billed more than once, was RTO freight billed on a delivered parcel, and was a COD fee billed on a prepaid parcel. Each one is a credit to ask for.

Key points

  • Couriers bill in weight slabs, commonly 500 g steps, so a small weight difference can mean a whole extra slab.
  • Volumetric weight from the box size can be higher than the actual weight; enter real dimensions.
  • One AWB should carry one forward freight charge. Two is a duplicate unless the parcel was genuinely re-shipped.
  • RTO freight belongs only to parcels that actually returned.
  • COD fees belong only to COD parcels.

Where freight money leaks

Freight is billed per AWB, often weeks after the parcel moved, and usually deducted from your wallet or remittance rather than paid by invoice. That makes overcharges easy to miss.

The four checks

CheckHow to spot it
Heavier slab than shippedCharged weight falls in a higher slab than the applied weight
Freight billed twiceThe same AWB has more than one forward freight line
RTO on a delivered parcelRTO freight on an AWB the orders report shows as delivered
COD fee on a prepaid parcelA COD charge on an AWB for a prepaid order

Raising it

Group the AWBs by problem and raise one ticket per problem with the AWB list, the charged amounts and the reports attached. For weight disputes, packing photos or videos with the scale reading help.

Veritally for Shopify runs all four checks on every AWB from the reports you upload, and writes the claim for each problem.

Frequently asked questions

What is volumetric weight?

A weight calculated from the box's length, width and height. Couriers charge the higher of actual and volumetric weight, so oversized boxes cost more.

How do I avoid weight disputes?

Enter accurate weight and box dimensions when you create the shipment, and keep a photo or video of each packed parcel on the scale.
