COD cash flow for Shopify stores in India: where your money sits between order and bank

By the Veritally team · · 3 min read

Your Shopify dashboard says you sold. Your bank says otherwise. For COD orders, the gap between the two is a chain of hands, and you need to watch every link.

The journey of a COD rupee

When a customer pays cash on delivery, the money does not come to you. It goes to the delivery person, then to the courier's hub, then to the courier company, then, if you use an aggregator, to the aggregator, and finally to your bank in a remittance batch. Each step takes time, and each step is a place where an order can be dropped.

Why Shopify alone can't tell you

Shopify knows the order was placed and, if your app updates it, that it was fulfilled. It does not know whether cash for that order ever reached your bank. Marking COD orders as paid in Shopify when they are delivered is common, and it hides every missing remittance.

Three numbers to watch every week

  1. COD delivered but not remitted. Orders delivered more than your courier's remittance cycle ago with no remittance yet.
  2. Remitted less than collected. Batches where the remittance total is lower than the sum of its orders, often because freight or RTO charges were netted off without a clear breakdown.
  3. Remittance not in bank. A batch the aggregator shows as paid that is not in your bank statement.

The guides cover each in detail: Shopify COD remittance reconciliation, Shiprocket COD remittance not received and Delhivery COD remittance reconciliation.

Netting off makes it murky

Many aggregators deduct freight, RTO and other charges from your COD remittance instead of billing you separately. That is convenient, but it means the remittance never equals the cash collected, so you cannot spot a missing order by eye. You have to separate the two: what was collected, and what was deducted, line by line. See auditing Shiprocket freight charges.

Reduce the amount in transit

Less COD means less money in transit. A prepaid discount, a small COD fee or COD limits on high-risk pin codes all help. Read COD vs prepaid: the real cost for sellers before you decide.

Close the loop every week

A weekly ten-minute check of the three numbers above keeps COD under control. Monthly, match every COD order to a remittance line and every remittance to the bank. Veritally for Shopify does this inside your Shopify admin: it reads your orders live, matches them to your courier and gateway reports and your bank, and lists every order where money did not arrive.

Frequently asked questions

How long does COD remittance take in India?

It depends on your courier or aggregator and your plan. Check your agreement for the remittance cycle, then flag any delivered COD order older than that cycle with no remittance.

Why is my COD remittance less than my COD orders?

Usually because freight, RTO or other charges were deducted from the remittance. Occasionally an order is missing from the batch. Split collected and deducted amounts to find out which.

Should I mark COD orders as paid in Shopify on delivery?

Only if you separately confirm that the cash was remitted to your bank. Otherwise Shopify shows money you have not received.
