After the festive sale: a payout checklist for Meesho, Flipkart and Amazon sellers
By the Veritally team · · 4 min read
The sale is over, the orders are shipped and the returns are trickling in. This is the month where most sellers lose money without noticing, because nobody has time to check.
Why the weeks after a sale are risky
During a sale you are packing, not reading reports. Order volume can jump several times over in a few days, couriers are overloaded, and returns come back in a wave two to four weeks later. Every one of those things creates room for a payout to go wrong: an order marked RTO that was actually delivered, a return credited against the wrong product, a weight slab bumped up because the courier re-measured a box in a hurry.
None of these show up as an error. Your payout just arrives a little lighter than it should, and because the total is bigger than usual, the gap is easy to miss.
The checklist
1. Freeze the sale window
Write down the exact dates of the sale, plus seven days before and after. That is your audit window. Download every report for it in one sitting, before you start the next month's work:
- Payments or settlement report from your seller panel
- Orders report for the same dates
- Your bank statement for the same dates, plus seven days after the last payout
The help centre shows where each report lives for each marketplace.
2. Count delivered orders against paid orders
This is the single most valuable check. Take every order the orders report marks as delivered and look for it in the payments report. Any delivered order that never appears in a payout is money owed to you. During sales, this list is usually longer than in a normal month.
3. Look at RTO and return charges line by line
A spike in returns is expected after a sale. A spike in RTO charges on orders that were delivered is not. Read our guide on RTO charged on a delivered order and check the tracking history for anything that looks off.
4. Check weight charges on your best sellers
If one product sold hundreds of units, a wrong weight slab on that product is multiplied hundreds of times. Weigh one packed unit, compare it with what the courier billed, and use the shipping weight calculator to see which slab it should fall in.
5. Match every payout to your bank
Each payout has a UTR or reference number. Find each one in your bank statement. A payout that the marketplace says it sent but your bank never received is rare, but when it happens it is usually large.
6. Raise claims while the window is open
Marketplaces give you a limited time to dispute a return or a charge. Check your panel for the current window, and raise the oldest items first. The claim message generator writes a clear ticket in English or Hindi, and the claim tracker keeps follow-up dates in one place.
How long does this take?
By hand, with spreadsheets, a sale month can take a full weekend for a seller with a few thousand orders. That is exactly why most sellers skip it. Veritally runs checks 2 to 5 in about a minute: upload the three files on your phone, and every difference is listed with its order number and the evidence behind it. It is free to check, and you pay only if we find your money.
One habit that pays for itself
Put a reminder in your calendar for three weeks after every sale. That is when the returns have settled and the payouts for most delivered orders should have arrived. Check once, properly, and you close the sale with confidence instead of a guess.
Frequently asked questions
When should I check payouts after a big sale?
About three weeks after the sale ends, once most returns have come back and delivered orders have had time to be paid. Check again after the return window closes for the latest orders.
What is the most common payout problem after a sale?
Delivered orders that never appear in any payout, and RTO or return charges on orders that were actually delivered. Both get more frequent when order volume spikes.
Do I need all three reports?
The payments report is required. The orders report adds the unpaid-orders check and the bank statement adds the did-it-reach-my-bank check. Each file you add switches on one more check.
