The quiet leak: why small sellers lose money in payouts without ever noticing
By the Veritally team · · 3 min read
No one sends you a message saying an order was not paid. The money just does not arrive, and the next payout covers it up.
Why you don't notice
A payout is one number. It arrives in your bank, it looks roughly right, and you move on. Behind that one number are hundreds of lines: orders, fees, shipping, returns, adjustments from earlier periods. A few wrong lines among hundreds do not change the total enough to feel wrong.
There are four reasons small sellers in particular miss this.
1. The reports are hard to read
Settlement reports are long, use their own vocabulary, and split one order across several rows and sometimes several payouts. Reading one properly takes hours the first time. Our seller payout glossary helps, but most sellers simply do not have the hours.
2. Timing hides gaps
Orders are paid in cycles, and some are paid weeks after delivery. When an order is missing from this week's payout, it is reasonable to assume it will come next week. Sometimes it never does, and by the time you would notice, it is buried under new orders.
3. Mistakes are small one at a time
A wrong weight slab or a wrongly marked RTO might be a few tens of rupees. Nobody files a ticket for that. But the same mistake repeated across a product line, every week, for a year, is real money.
4. You are busy selling
Sourcing, listing, packing and customer messages fill the day. Checking payouts feels like admin, and admin always comes last.
What the leak usually looks like
When sellers do check properly, the differences usually fall into a few groups:
- Delivered orders that never appeared in any payout
- RTO or return charges on orders that were delivered and kept
- Weight slabs higher than the packed parcel
- Penalties or recoveries applied to the wrong order, or twice
- Payouts the marketplace says it sent that never reached the bank
Each one is explained in why is my marketplace payout less.
A five-minute habit
You do not need a full audit every week. You need one small habit: when a payout arrives, look at it next to the orders delivered in that cycle and ask, "does this roughly make sense?" If the number of orders paid is clearly lower than the number delivered, look closer.
The payout leak score asks eight quick questions about how you handle payouts today and tells you where you are most exposed, without uploading anything.
And one deeper check a month
Once a month, check properly. Veritally reads your payments report, orders report and bank statement and lists every difference, with the order number and the evidence for it. It is free to check, and if we find nothing, you pay nothing. That is the point: you should not have to pay to find out that everything was fine.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my marketplace payout is short?
Compare the delivered orders in the cycle with the orders that appear in the payout, and check deductions against each order's status. A clear gap between delivered and paid orders is the first sign.
Is a payout difference always money owed to me?
No. Many differences are timing, adjustments from another period or charges that are correct. A difference becomes a claim only when the evidence supports it.
Can I check without uploading reports?
Yes. The payout leak score asks eight questions and shows where your process is exposed, without any file. To find actual money owed, you need the reports.
